Message from Chepstow Racecourse

Message for Chepstow Bookmakers from Richard Holland G.M.

In response to a number of concerns raised about betting at the ‘one enclosure’ race meetings, during the bookmakers’ meeting held at Chepstow Racecourse on Wednesday 30th June 2010, I thought it would be useful to bring everyone up to date on the resultant action plan.

This relates specifically to those racedays when Chepstow operates with one public enclosure and we are really trying to respond to points raised by many bookmakers present.  Betting arrangements at the other Chepstow race meetings will be unaffected.

A number of ideas were discussed and there will be a trial of two in particular at forthcoming meetings.

Firstly, at the next ‘one enclosure’ meeting on the afternoon of Tuesday 3rd August the Grandstand & Paddock bar and facilities will be open to the public as will the nearby Tote betting shop.

For the evening meeting on Thursday 19th August (also a ‘one enclosure’ meeting) in addition there will be a New Betting Area offered to all bookmakers.  This new area will comprise space for up to 12 bookmakers on the front of the Premier Enclosure Lawn facing the grandstand.  Rails & Pitch bookmakers will be offered the positions in the new betting area alternately in order of seniority (administered by Bill Sherwood).  The cost of a betting badge for the new area trial will be five times the public admission price.

I’m keen to receive feedback from bookmakers on these trials in order that an appropriate way forward for bookmaking at the ‘one enclosure’ meetings can be determined.
