Pony Racing Racecourse Series – A Guide to Betting

There are 23 Pony Racing fixtures planned for the 2010 season, commencing on 11 April at Kelso with the finals on 16 October at Cheltenham racecourse.  The fixture list is below.  Each fixture (including the finals) will host a maximum of two pony races.   The maximum field size is 12, increasing to 15 for the finals.

The following arrangements will apply to each race meeting in the Racecourse Series (please note that different arrangements will apply at point-to-point race meetings): -

1.    All bookmakers who are entitled to stand at the track may bet on the Pony Racing Series.

2.    It is the responsibility of each bookmaker to manage his own book and to display appropriate signage.  There are no pre-determined minimum or maximum stakes/payouts.  Place terms are at the discretion of each bookmaker.

3.    The officials for the conventional horse racing will also officiate for the Pony Racing.  BHA officials on duty for Pony Racing are the Starter, Advanced Flag Operator, Clerk of the Scales and Judge.  The commentator will invariably be the same person as well and a member of the Stewards will watch the race in the side-on box with the Clerk of the Course and a Pony Racing Authority Steward.

4.    All pony riders are required to weigh out and weigh in.

5.    The result will be announced after the weigh-in.  Any subsequent changes will not affect the result for betting purposes.

6.    If there is a Steward’s Enquiry, this will be announced promptly over the PA system.

7.    Advance cards and form will be available on the Pony Racing Authority’s website – www.pra.gb.com – commencing approximately ten days before the relevant race day.  Any changes (e.g. a non-runner or change of rider) will be updated on the site as soon as they are known.  If there is sufficient time, non-runners will be replaced by ponies who have failed to make the cut, but it is unlikely that this will occur within 48 hours of the race.  Changes are never made once it is too late to amend the racecard.

8.    The runners and riders will be included in the official racecard on the day.  Reserves will not be permitted on the day.

9.    Withdrawals on the day will be subject to Tattersalls Rule 4 deductions where appropriate.  The Betting Ring Manager will be responsible for deciding the level of deductions.

10.  Only ponies within the same height category will be permitted to race against each other.  There will be no ‘race within a race’ to accommodate different-sized ponies in the same event.

11.  Races with less than six runners may be cancelled by the racecourse.

12.  Pony Racing taking place before the conventional racing will commence approximately ninety (90) minutes before the first conventional race.

13.   Pony Racing taking place after the conventional racing will commence approximately ten minutes after the last conventional race.

14.  The two pony races will be staged approximately ten minutes apart – i.e. 90 minutes and 80 minutes before or 10 minutes and 20 minutes after.

15.  It should be noted that the ages of the riders will vary from 11 to 15, but only persons aged 18 years and over are permitted to place bets on pony racing.
